Glamorous Girls in Gorgeous Glasses!

American poet Dorothy Parker wrote 'Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses!' How wrong she was. It's an outdated theory and guys and girls can wear their specs knowing they won't spoil their chances in the dating department! Glasses are the latest trend and celebrities all over the world are wearing their specs with pride. Most well known designers have a collection in a range of styles and colours, with prices to suit all.

Brit girls Kelly Brook, Leona lewis and Cheryl Cole all ooze sex appeal and look stunning in the latest eyewear.

Cat Eye Comeback

30th April 2013

After making a recent comeback, the upswept cat eye lense is still proving to be a hit and this popular style of the 1950s and 60s is more daring than ever!

The cat eye frame makes a strong statement but you can be as extreme or subtle as you please, whatever works for you. Featuring prominently in Prada's Spring/Summer collection, this unique design works well with retro styling from the 50s era. Remember the feminine, sophisticated tailoring of Audrey Hepburn? Team your sassy sunglasses with monochrome prints, shift dresses, capri pants, full floral skirts, polka dots and gingham!

Cat eye sunglasses are not to everyone's taste but they do flatter most face shapes. Sharp edges can detract from a round face and work well on a heart shaped face that has a wide forehead and narrow chin. Try a pair on and you may be pleasantly surprised!

Celebs who have embraced this latest eyewear craze include Rihanna, Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley.

Have Fun With the Latest Vintage Vibe!

16th April 2013

It seems that when it comes to eyewear, anything goes these days. We've tried quirky Cat Eye, 1950s Clubmasters, thick framed Wayfarers and ornate baroque style frames. Glasses are a fun accessory you can collect, like shoes!

Have you tried the latest retro round specs that John Lennon made famous all those years ago? Agreed, they're an acquired taste that won't suit everyone but these fun frames with their circular lenses can add character. They frame the eyes and are great on a square or long face.

Celebrities that have enjoyed this style comeback include Johnny Depp, Simon Cowell, Lady Gaga, Elton John and Bono. Whilst Harry Potter didn't exactly rock retro or incite a huge fashion following, Steve Jobs fuelled the revival and sales soared!

Strong Women in History

10th April 2013

The death of Margaret Thatcher continues to divide a nation. Some will mourn, some will rejoice but there's no denying, she was a formidable leader who deserved her 'Iron Lady' title. Baroness Thatcher was leader of the Conservative party from 1975 and Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990. She was the longest serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century and the only woman to have held office.

Always controversial, her greatest achievements included winning the Falklands War and limiting the power of the Unions. The introduction of the hated Poll Tax and privatisation of the utilities, such as BT and British Gas, are deemed to be her most memorable failings!

Margaret Thatcher The Iron lady

Margaret Thatcher is one of the most influential female figures of our time. Throughout history, women with strong leadership qualities, rightly or wrongly, have fought for their cause. Women with a voice and plenty of guts include Joan of Arc and Florence Nightingale. At just 17, Joan inspired a French revolt against the occupation of the English and Florence showed dedication during the Crimean War that changed the perception of the nursing profession forever. Queen Victoria was a stern ruler who took to the throne at 18 and influenced government policy and ministerial appointments.Boadicea was a famous Queen of ancient Briton, who led a rebellion against Roman occupiers.

Image has often played a part in the success of strong leaders and business women. In the 1920s, women became liberated and discovered that fashion could empower them to accomplish more. It's a dated theory now and not terribly PC but clever tailoring and styling can help a person to be taken seriously. Maggie was no stranger to a 'power suit' and a set of shoulder pads! She was impeccably groomed, with a formal hairdo, red lipstick and court shoes.

Giorgio Armani, Donna Karen and Calvin Klein helped make the trouser/skirt suit part of the female working wardrobe. A sharp suit can create a masculine silhouette. Think Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver in the film 'Working Girl' and that was power dressing at it's finest. Many female characters have used their style to their advantage. Joan Collins, as Alexis Carrington in Dynasty, was a force to be reckoned with and Barbara Windsor as petite Peggy Mitchell could put on a suit, backcomb her hair and terrify even Walford's toughest gangsters!

Joan CollinsWorking GirlPeggy Mitchell

Looking back on it now, power dressing seems almost laughable and slightly ridiculous and it is, of course, perfectly acceptable to turn up to the workplace in florals and chiffon and still succeed! If you want to add that edge to a feminine outfit, team with a designer tote bag and a pair of strong statement glasses.

Dolce and Gabbana Facing Multi Million Pound Fine.

4th April 2013

Designers Dolce and Gabbana have been stung with a £289 million fine by Italy's Tax Commission, for tax evasion. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, founders of one of Italy's most successful fashion houses, were charged with tax avoidance after the sale of their brands Dolce and Gabbana and D&G, back in 2004. They sold to Luxembourg based company Gado Srl, rumoured to have been chosen for their location and lower tax rates! The pair appealed in 2010 but were denied and the battle continues.

Both designers refute the claim and Gabbana tweeted 'To be accused of something untrue is not a beautiful thing but in the end, who cares? We will all end up six feet under. I am interested in making clothes and that is all. They can say and do what they want'. His laid back attitude comes as no surprise, the pair are both billionaires!

They met back in 1980 when they worked for the same fashion house. The couple realised that they shared the same passion for good quality, beautifully made clothing. They presented their first women's collection in 1985 and in 1986 their first store opened.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana Dolce and Gabbana

Dolce and Gabbana enjoy hanging out with the stars. It was Madonna who first helped the duo get recognised. She asked them to design an outfit for her back in 1991 to wear to the premier of her 'Truth or Dare' documentary. They created a stunning crystal embellished corset that she teamed with thigh high boots and a black jacket. She has remained a fan ever since.

The designers have also struck up an unlikely friendship with teen pop idol Justin Bieber. They organised an after party to celebrate with him after a gig in Milan. It was held at their restaurant 'Gold'. They have revealed their admiration for his sense of style and the fact that he takes care of his looks! 19 year old Bieber wears tailored pieces from Dolce and Gabbana's menswear line. Love him or hate him, there's no denying..the boy's got taste!

Masterchef Returns

22nd March 2013

Masterchef has returned to our screens again and welcomes the double act that give Ant and Dec a run for their money! Gregg Wallace and John Torode have known each other for 20 years and it's their love of cooking that cements the friendship. We see a slimmer, trimmer Gregg sporting a new pair of specs but will his love of desserts cause his waistline to expand once again this series?

It's week 2 and we're half way through the emotional journey that takes contestants to the quarter final. These willing victims are really put through the wringer, each one desperate to take the Masterchef title. It's not my idea of a good time, sweating away in a hot kitchen, getting flour in your hair and egg on your face, only to have your burnt offerings scrutinised by the watching millions!

John Torode and Gregg Wallace Masterchef 2012 Finalists

Last year's finalists have gone back to their day jobs, making way for the next batch to bravely braise, boil, sautee and flambe, increasing my feelings of inadequacy, as the only terms used in my kitchen are microwave and deep-fry! We will witness an assortment of exotic ingredients lovingly turned into something almost edible, beautifully presented with a jus of this and a sprig of that! One contestant served up a pork chop cooked in lavender, cumin, cardamom, mace and nutmeg. Why spoil it when a sprinkle of salt and a dash of ketchup would suffice!?

I do enjoy Masterchef and I admire the skill and patience involved. I even bought a big thick cookery book after the last series.... I use it to stand on to reach my top cupboard where my special 'cooking sherry' is stored!! Masterchef is on this week for 3 nights. How will I find the time to cook? Chinese takeaway anyone?!

Gregg Wallace is at the height of fashion with his latest choice of glasses. His retro Clubmasters are currently enjoying a big revival and are on our best sellers list! Check out these Ray Ban RBV-RX5154-2000-49 Clubmaster Glasses. They are shiny black and have a heavy brow line across silver rimmed oval lenses. Well it's our favourite time of year again... The Budget. The Chancellor of the Exchequer becomes public enemy number 1! The poor bloke can't win. He can't please all of the people all of the time! In a time of recession and hardship, we've all got to tighten our belts. When we do manage to enjoy ourselves, we'll find the price of booze and fags has gone up, petrol prices are escalating. We're paying more tax and getting less interest on our savings. George Osborne is calling us an 'Aspiration Nation'. It's a budget designed to help 'people who aspire to work hard to get on' in, what he admitted, was a 'difficult' climate. He's not wrong there!

Happy Mother's Day

8th March 2013

Mother's day is the one day a year when our families show us how much they care about and appreciate us. We are so much more than just Mums. Our role includes- cook, cleaner, taxi driver, nurse, teacher, counsellor, finance manager and so on! We do it all for love..don't we? So after you've eaten your 'lovingly made' breakfast in bed and arranged your flowers, sit back and relax, break open the the choccies the kids have bought you and feast your eyes on this little lot!

These Hollywood heart throbs have all modelled for Police eyewear. Police are affordable glasses made with the finest quality materials. David Beckham, George Clooney and Antonio Banderas are just some of the famous celebs who have endorsed them.

David Beckham for PoliceGeorge Clooney for PoliceAntonio Banderas for Police

Two men that really wear their glasses well and are hardly seen without them, are Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt. In fact, it would be rude not to feature them! Mr Depp is an eccentric character who can carry off his small round retro specs. Brad is a big fan of Ray Ban, particuarly their Aviator sunglasses. I must say I prefer both without the beard and long hair they are currently sporting, so let's hope it's just a midlife crisis! Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias can often be seen wearing a pair of sunglasses and a baseball cap. It's a rubbish disguise, we'd recognise his tanned skin and pouty lips anywhere and He can be my hero any day!

I hope you have enjoyed my little bit of self-indulgence. You know, sometimes I love my job ;-)

Scarlett Johansson's New Dolce and Gabbana Campaign

Scarlett Johansson is the current Ambassador for designer label Dolce and Gabbana and they have just released a new advertising campaign for their make up. With her stunning looks and flawless complexion she is the perfect woman for the job.

Scarlett has previously advertised Dolce and Gabbana fragrances, with sultry poses and very little clothing! But her talents go further than just a spot of modelling. She is a credible actress with a string of box office hits behind her, including The Island, Hitchcock, Girl With a Pearl Earring and who could forget THAT black catsuit in The Avengers!

Scarlett in the Avengers Scarlett Johansson D&G Fragrance

Not content with notching up a succession of top movies, the blonde bombshell has tried her hand at singing too! Her original song for the documentary 'Chasing Ice' was nominated for an Oscar and she has formed a girl band that we hope will fill the gaping hole left by The Spice Girls!

Scarlett was married to Hollywood hunk Ryan Reynolds and is currently dating French journalist Romain Dauriac (sorry lads!). Her latest venture has taken her back to Broadway where her acting career began, aged 8. Scarlett has some big shoes to fill, as she's taken on the role of Maggie in 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' originally played by Elizabeth Taylor.

But enough about that, I'm sure you just want to look at some more pretty pictures....so enjoy!

Look How Far We've Come!

5th February 2013

There are many theories about the first invention of spectacles but it is generally accepted that the Italians should take the credit! In Pisa, there are references to glasses in Italian manuscripts dating back as far as 1313.

In the mid 1300s, English philosopher and scientist Roger Bacon reported the use of reading lenses but it's unclear whether these were spectacles or reading stones that were made from glass, to magnify.

We know that basic corrective lenses were created in Italy somewhere between 1284 and 1400 and by the end of the 1400s, eyeglasses were being exported all over Europe.

Pictured below are a replica pair of Rivet glasses found during an excavation on the shore of the River Thames. They are dated at around 1440 and were made from bone and copper wire. Notched teeth gripped the nose and these highly impractical and slightly painful glasses could only stay on if the wearer kept still! A more comfortable and attractive option was made from steel in the 1500s and rested on the bridge of the wearer's nose. Rivet specs were later replaced by Temple specs. In the 1800s, eyewear had progressed significantly due to a great advancement in craftmanship. Although still fairly basic, glasses began to take on the shape that we know today and a variety of materials was used, including horn, metal and leather. Arms were added to help the glasses stay on and extendable temples helped to reduce pressure on the head!

Rivet Glasses Glasses from 1500s Glasses from 1800s

It was only really in the early part of the last century that manufacturers began to improve the look of spectacles. They had evolved so far that they started to become more about fashion and less about function. While visual aid was always a priority, they were fast becoming a fashion accessory. It became acceptable to wear your glasses in public and wear them with pride! In the 50s, film stars and celebrities started to embrace this new trend and the housewives followed suit!

Sophia Loren Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall 1950s-Glasses

Women often regard their glasses as part of their outfit, as important as their shoes, handbags and jewellery and today's modern man might give them the same consideration as his tie and cuff links!

There is a wide variety of choice for today's specs wearer with glasses of all shapes and sizes. Designer labels and brand names are big news! The quality of materials has improved and glasses are lightweight and more comfortable.

The Italians still excel in the eyewear world. They are masters of their trade and designers Prada and Dolce and Gabbana are always a popular choice here at 1010!

These Prada PRV-PR-04PV-JAX1010-52 Glasses have an intricate lace pattern and are crafted from the finest materials. Red Carpet Glamour

26th February 2013

America hosted it's 85th Academy Awards ceremony last night and what a spectacle it was! In true Oscar night fashion, the star studded red carpet was bursting with celebs young and old, including nominees, 9 year old Quvenzhane Wallis and 85 year old Emmanuelle Riva! Brit winner Daniel Day Lewis made history by picking up his 3rd Best Actor Award and English songstress Adele won Best Original Song for Skyfall.

Although, if we're honest, it's not really about 'What did they win?' but more about 'What did they wear?'! There were those who played it safe with designer gowns in shades of nude and white and then of course, there was Helena Bonham Carter, who, with her own unique style, never fails to amaze and astound!

Here's my round up of the best dressed, who should have picked up an award for their style, poise, creativity and gorgeousness!

Ladies in red- Valentino was the designer of choice for these lovely ladies. Jennifer Aniston wore a scarlet gown with a tight bodice and full skirt that showed off her perfect figure. Sally Field chose a red dress with ruffles and a full train and teamed it with trainers for the afterparty! Hilary Swank looked ravishing in red in a striking sheer lace number.

When Did Geek Become Chic?

19th February 2013

How many celebrities can you think of that are known by the glasses they wear? For decades famous faces have used glasses to enhance their persona and image has always played an important part in the rise to fame. It's about originality and creating a unique look that people will identify you with. If you say the names Elton John and Dame Edna, you immediately picture two rather eccentric bespectacled characters, who are both talented entertainers. Larger than life personalities and imaginative styling have helped them hit the big time!

It comes down to clever marketing and working with what you're given! Alan Carr, Buddy Holly and Michael Caine have all been helped by distinctive eyewear to gain public recognition.

Elton John Dame Edna Everage Buddy Holly Alan Carr

There are other lovable famous names who are instantly recognisable for their taste in eyewear but for them, glasses are just a commodity designed to help them see better!

Deidre Barlow Mahatma Gandhi Joe Pasquale Dennis Taylor

Gone are the days when kids were bullied at school for wearing glasses. Quirky misfits have now become superheros. Clark Kent cast off his oversized Wayfarers and took to the skies as Superman to save the planet. Harry Potter would never have survived in the playground in my day but at Hogwarts he can wave his magic wand and triumph over evil! TV's Ugly Betty really doesn't have much going for her, saddled with a replica pair of standard issue National Health glasses and a brace! However, she manages to land a job at Mode, America's top publishing house and she always gets her man! It seems, at long last, these labelled stereotypes are fighting back! Just look at Chris Evans...the talented, cheeky, red-haired, specs wearer is a multi millionaire!

Once, glasses were all about improving your vision but now they are so much more. They are a fashion statement, an extension of yourself and a way of exuding confidence and flare! Add a pair of trendy glasses to your outfit and it really changes your look. Big names in the music industry, Will.i.am, Bruno Mars and Tom Fletcher (from McFly) are the epitome of style! They wear their specs with pride and have set a trend that many now follow. It's a cool new gang, that with my perfect 20/20 vision, I'm yet to be part of...but when the Optician finally delivers the news of my deteriorating eyesight, I may just give a little whoop of delight and head straight for the Pradas!

Will.i.am Bruno Mars Tom Fletcher

Trends for eyewear often come full circle. The very glasses that we have mocked our parents for wearing back in the 70s, we could well find ourselves buying soon. Retro is big news! Clubmasters and oversized Wayfarers have both made a comeback. Be bold in your choices and get yourself noticed, after all, it hasn't done Elton John or Lady Gaga any harm!

These modern Retro Ray Ban RX5184-2144-50 really stand out from the crowd. With a bold leopard print pattern, these stunning DG3124-1995-50 Dolce and Gabbana Glasses are a must-have! Follow the celebs and opt for these daring Prada PR-09PV-1AB-52 Glasses. For those trend setting boys Prada Linea Rossa PS-02-CV-1BO-101-55 Glasses are bold and sophisticated.

Jamie Bell Models for Prada

14th February 2013

The boy's all grown up! Jamie Bell, best known and loved for his role as the young dancer Billy Elliot, has swapped his tights and leotard for a sharp suit and been strutting his stuff on the Prada catwalk!

The 26 year old actor found the experience new and nerve racking. He told The Guardian ' You realise how short you are. You discover nervous twitches in your face you didn't know you had and you don't know where to look.'

Jamie married stunning American actress Evan Rachel Wood last year and the pair are expecting their first child soon.

Jamie was in good company on the Prada runway. Alongside the young actor were famous names that included Gary Oldman, Willem Dafoe and Garrett Hedlund, all wearing an impressive display of sophisticated tailoring.

Prada have also used the handsome actor to front their latest eyewear campaign. He can be seen modelling quirky round sunglasses that possess all the quality and style you would expect from Prada .

Valentine's Day- Is It All Just Sentimental Claptrap?!

12th February 2013

Valentine's Day is on February 14th...every year! Love it or hate it.. you can't avoid it. It's everywhere you turn! Shops and supermarkets full of fluffy teddy bears, heart shaped confectionery, overpriced flowers, romantic CDs promising 48 of your favourite 'All Time Greatest Love songs', chocolate body paint and saucy underwear, cheap Champagne and 3 course ready meals, feeding 2 for a tenner! Shelves are lined with a vast array of greeting cards with soppy slogans, allowing you to declare your undying love for only 59p! I can even buy one for my cat asking him to 'Be my Valentine!'

Happy Valentine's Day Cute Bears Cupid

I'm not a cynic. It's just that it's all got so commercialised. Retailers cashing in on the good fortune of those of us lucky enough to be part of a couple...and if you're not, Valentine's Day can be the loneliest day of the year! I've spent many a Valentine's Day miserably watching out for the postman, waiting for him to bring a card that I know is never going to arrive! I've comforted myself with a large selection box of Thorntons, whilst watching Bridget Jones and reassuring myself that next year will be different and I will find my Mr Darcy!

Don't get me wrong. I love a bit of schmaltzy gushy nonsense every once in a while. A night out in an extortionately priced restaurant, being serenaded by a trio of Spanish musicians with roses between their teeth, gives me a night off from the washing up! I'll pick out some sparkly, diamond encrusted jewellery and casually leave the brochure open on the coffee table for Mr Darcy to see and put Interflora's number on speed dial on his mobile phone.

Is all this commercialism just setting our partners up for failure and us for disappointment? Expectations are high. Those cutesy cuddling grinning couples on the M&S ads have set the standard pretty high. Of course, I will look surprised and delighted when I receive my wilting Carnations and family sized box of Maltesers..because 'If you have love, you have everything'.. right?!

Just for fun, here are my Valentine's picks fom 1010 Direct to get you in the mood!

Prada Designs Costumes for 'The Great Gatsby'

6th February 2013

The remake of the 1974 classic 'The Great Gatsby', tipped to be this year's big blockbuster, promises to be worth the wait. With ingenious casting, a great story line, strong characters and stunning costumes, the film is expected to draw in the crowds. Director Baz Luhrmann has called in fashion designer Muccia Prada to help capture the spirit of the 1920s.

The designer has collaborated with Luhrmann to create 40 cocktail dresses and evening gowns for the set. The costumes have been adapted from past Prada and Miu Miu collections. Miuccia, granddaughter of Mario Prada has worked with Luhrmann three times before, so her involvement comes as no surprise.

Actress Carey Mulligan, who plays Daisy Buchanan, is a big Prada fan. She chose a Prada gown to wear at her own wedding. When the film is launched in May, we should expect an abundance of glamour and gorgeousness and a set dripping with sequins, fur, crystals, pearls and embroidery. Ladies, prepare the be dazzled!

Prada have earned their right to be involved in designing the costumes for big screen productions. The Prada brand has become one of the most prestigious fashion labels in the world. They never compromise on quality and style and have kept their Italian heritage close to their hearts. It has remained a family business and 100 years on, is still going strong

The Prada brand dates back to the beginning of the last century when in 1913 brothers Mario and Martino Prada opened their first store in Milan. The shop sold leather goods and luxury accessories. Thanks to the quality and sophistication of its goods, the store's popularity grew with the aristocracy and in 1919 Prada became the official supplier to the Italian Royal family. With the help of Luisa Prada, Mario's daughter, who became his successor, the business empire gained prestige and became the international sensation it is today.

The 1970s saw a progression into fashion when Miuccia met and later married Tuscan businessman Patrizio Bertelli. Together they combined business ideas and creativity. Prada added luxury retail goods that included clothing and footwear. Stores opened across the globe and the first Prada fashion show was held in Milan in 1988.

In 2000, eyewear manufacturer De Rigo signed a joint venture agreement with the Prada group for the marketing and distribution of their glasses and sunglasses. Prada produce eyewear for men and women, with all the Italian flair you would expect from a brand that has a century's worth of talent and experience!

New 'Hitchcock' Film Release

29th January 2013

The eagerly anticipated film 'Hitchcock' makes it's way to the big screen on the 8th February. The film is directed by Sacha Gervasi and is based on legendary film producer and director Sir Alfred Hitchcock. The story centres around his life and marrital issues during the making of the classic 1959 horror movie Psycho.

'Hitchcock' features an all star cast with the great man himself being played by Sir Anthony Hopkins. He has described Hitchcock as 'dark, troubled, cold and ruthless and also big hearted, warm and ingenious'. The film should make interesting viewing then!

Hitchcock's long suffering wife and creative partner, Alma Reville, is played by esteemed actress Helen Mirren. She is said to have instantly disliked him when she auditioned for him as a young actress but her performance in the film is oscar winning. Scarlett Johansson is convincing as Hitchcock's leading lady Janet Leigh. Scarlett admitted to 'feeling cautious about tackling that iconic shower scene' and who can blame her?...It doesn't end well!

Just as colourful as the plot and the characters are the costumes. Look out for 1950s fashion and glamour. Key pieces include pencil skirts, beautifully cut wiggle dresses, fun swing dresses and petticoats, pleats, polka dots and pastels. Always teamed with kitten heels and those all important accessories such as leather gloves, jewelled brooches, beaded handbags, pillbox hats and fur trimmings.

Eyewear of the 1950s is very distinctive and very much a fashion statement. Still popular today, you'll find retro designs in every brand and colour. The leading characters in the film wore Clubmaster, Cat Eye or Wayfarer glasses, adding to the 1950s authenticity.

Polarized Sunglasses

27 September 2012

Polarized v UV400Polarized VisionThrough a polarized lens

At 1010 Direct, one of the most common questions we are asked is "what do polarized lenses do and would I benefit from paying a little bit extra for a pair of polarized instead of standard UV protective sunglasses?" The answer is that the benefit of wearing polarized sunglasses completely depends on the individual! So instead of trying to tell you what you should and shouldn't buy, we decided it would be more beneficial to give you an explanation of what they do differently to standard sunglasses, and where and when you might need them so you can decide for yourself!

Regular sunglasses indiscriminately filter out all light no matter which direction it comes from (horizontal, diagonal or vertical!), and they dampen but do not eliminate glare. Polarized lenses have a laminated surface which contains vertical stripes; these stripes prevent all directions of light other than vertical from entering the eyes of the wearer, making vision clearer due to letting in vertical light and eliminating glare. The most common light prevented by polarized lenses which affects us on a daily basis is the reflection of sunlight from shiny surfaces. Regular drivers would find polarized sunglasses particularly helpful as the glare from the sun reflecting off other cars or the wet ground would be eliminated.

Another situation which is less common but which affects people in a number of different ways is the reflection of the sun in water. Those who visit the sea side, participate in watersports or go fishing would notice a significant improvement in vision with polarized sunglasses.

Those who spend a lot of time looking at LCD screens whilst wearing sunglasses, however, will find that they cannot actually see anything on the screen anymore - as the lenses block out the light coming from them! In terms of driving and skiing, there is a chance that despite improving vision due to eliminating glare, they also make patches of ice less identifiable which could be potentially dangerous!

In general, the main importance in terms of eye care and health is to have a good quality pair of sunglasses, no matter whether they are polarised or UV400. In terms of the type of lenses, the choice comes down to the lifestyle, location, and hobbies of the individual! Check out our full range of sunglasses by clicking here, or view all polarized sunglasses by clicking here!

Please note: Many of our regular sunglasses have the option to be fitted with polarized lenses for just £70 extra!

Milan Fashion Week

Milan Fashion Week 2012Milan Fashion Week 2012Milan Fashion Week 2012

Prada, Prada Linea Rossa, Ray Ban, Police and Dolce & Gabbana . These are arguably just a few of the most popular luxury fashion brands around, and what do they have in common? They are all based in one of the most famous fashion cities in the world: Milan. That is why, here at 1010 Direct, we have been understandably excited to see what the Milan Fashion week had to offer for Spring/Summer 2013!

With Prada and Dolce & Gabbana just to name a couple of designers showing us what the fashion world is going to bring this coming season , we have summed up the best from the week in eyewear!

The catwalks brought back the 60s look with florals, Japanese inspired shapes and block colours. In eyewear, the 60s bug eye style made a number of appearances to complement the bowling bags, vintage blazers and huge earrings which completed the rest of the 60s look.

Blue and mustard were the colours of the week, with floral patterns featuring on everything from shoes to coats to spectacles! And finally, again for SS13 we have the cat eye and thick rimmed round glasses leading the style stakes for another year!

We have put together a small collection of frames for you to see these trends for yourself…and you can now be a step ahead of the rest with your eyewear style for the coming year!

Inspired by the Olympics? Here are some tips for looking after your eyes during sporting activities...

Wearing glasses to play tennisRunning in sunglassesTeam GB rowers wearing polarized sunglasses

Our eyes are among the most delicate of all organs in the body. This is why extra care and consideration should be taken when we participate in sports, as our eyes are exposed to risk of damage which can have disabling or prolonged effects, even if the damage seems minor at the time.

When you have your eyes tested, be sure to tell your optician about your intentions to play sport so that you can be advised whether your current eyewear is suitable. Many people do not wear their glasses during sport because of discomfort or the risk of breaking their glasses, and they will often end up with headaches from straining their eyes or even injury because they cannot see clearly when participating and end up getting in the way of danger! Wearing the correct eyewear is necessary for enabling us to see clearly as well as protecting our eyes against potential dangers.

We have picked a few frames which we think are great to wear when participating in sport! For indoors we recommend these Tag Heuer spectacles, with comfortable nose pads and flexible arms. These arms are great for wearing under head gear and are unbreakable!

Tag Heuer 3201 003 Tag Heuer 5201 007

For outdoor sports we recommend wrap-around sunglasses so they fit closely around your head for maximum comfort and minimum breakage! Again, the Tag Heuer frames are great for wearing underneath head gear, and this pair has polycarbonate lenses which react to sunlight to provide you with the best possible vision. The Prada Linea Rossa brand is a reincarnation of 'Prada Sport' so they are designed especially for sport, including the shapes, materials and strengh of all their frames:

Tag Heuer 5018 191 Prada Linea Rossa 05MS BRU7W1

For watersports we recommend polarized lenses to reduce the glare from reflected sunlight. This pair by Prada Linea Rossa has changeable lenses so you can switch between polarized and standard UV lenses depending on your needs! The Ray Ban 8305 082/9A-64 below is our number 1 best seller week after week:

You can now enjoy your sporting activities to the full, with 100% clear vision! Please do not hesitate to contact us for any more information or advice.

5 reasons why we should all wear sunglasses now that the sun is out

27 July 2012

Summer Seaside

1. Sunglasses protect our eyes from harmful UV rays.

UV rays can cause cataracts and age-related macular degeneration later in life. They can also damage the delicate skin around the eyes which can wrinkle and cause signs of premature aging.

2. Sunglasses reduce glare.

All surfaces reflect light. Shiny surfaces such as water, snow, and car windscreens cause extremely bright reflections which can be distracting and interfere with vision; this is potentially dangerous when driving, riding a motorcycle, skiing, or boating. Sunglasses reduce glare for safer and more comfortable vision. Polarized sunglasses are particularly effective at reducing glare, especially from the shiny surfaces mentioned above!

3. Sunglasses protect your eyes from wind, dust and debris.

Sunglasses are effective wind barriers. Wearing sunglasses reduces the rate of evaporation of tears and helps to keep your eyes moist and comfortable. This is particularly useful for preventing contact lenses from drying out, as well as stopping windblown particles from getting in your eyes and causing a corneal abrasion. Close-fitting "wrap" style sport sunglasses are particularly effective at reducing the potential for dry eyes and eye injuries from windblown particles.

4. Sunglasses reduce headaches and eyestrain.

The pupil controls how much light reaches the light-sensitive retina in the back of the eye. In dim light, the pupil dilates to allow more light in. In bright light, the pupil constricts to keep too much light from striking the retina.  In very bright conditions, the pupil cannot constrict enough to reduce light to a comfortable level, causing us to squint. Muscle fatigue associated with squinting and constant constriction of the pupil can lead to headaches and eyestrain. Sunglasses reduce the amount of light reaching the eyes to a more comfortable level, eliminating the need for squinting and severe pupil constriction. This increases comfort and reduces the risk of headaches and eyestrain.

5. Sunglasses improve vision.

Our eyes require a certain range of ambient light for good vision. Too much light is as bad as too little. Excessive brightness causes glare, light-induced "bleaching" of the retina, and squinting - all of which can temporarily reduce visual acuity. On bright sunny days, sunglasses reduce the amount of light that reaches the retina to more optimal levels for clear, comfortable vision.

Our guide to choosing glasses that will suit your face shape

23 July 2012

Trying glasses on

There are many different face shapes which all suit different designs of eyewear, so we think it is important to choose a style which will compliment your looks as well as providing the maximum amount of comfort. To help you decide which pair of glasses to buy here are some tips on which will be the most suitable styles for you:

Round face: Avoid rounded frames, and go for a style which will lengthen and define your face shape and accentuate your cheekbones. We recommend classic style wayfarer sunglasses.

Square face: Avoid strong top bars and straight edged frames. Styles with curved edges will soften the jaw line and emphasise your eyes. We suggest Karen Millen 0096 spectacles and oversized rounded sunglasses such as the Ray Ban Jackie Ohh style.

Long face: Substantial frames such as our Givenchy SGV720 oversized sunglasses are very flattering to this shape. Also, contrasting or decorative temples such as DKNY DY4609 will add width to the face.

Triangular: Rectangular and smaller frames are the most suitable for a triangular face shape, as they help to balance out proportions. We recommend Vogue 3660B for women and Police V8281 for men.

Oval: This shape has balanced proportions and suits all styles of glasses! Just ensure the style you pick is not too narrow, as the most flattering styles will be ones that are as wide as or wider than the broadest part of your face. How about our best selling Ray Ban Clubmasters?

We hope this guide has been helpful and you are now ready to select some spectacles or sunglasses that will suit you the best!

Celebrity style sunglasses!

22 June 2012

Beyonce wearing Ray Ban clubmastersJustin Bieber in modern wayfarersJennifer Aniston wearing Ray Ban AviatorsBruno Mars in Ray Ban clubmastersEva Mendes in Prada sunglassesDavid Beckham wearing Ray Bans

Having analysed some of the world's favourite celebrities over the last month, our fashion experts at 1010 Direct have come back to us with a list of what is hot in the world of sunglasses this summer! Celebrities from across the globe have inspired us by showing off ever popular styles such as Ray-Ban clubmasters and Ray-Ban wayfarers as well as this year's most demanded style for women - the cat eye frame! We hope we can help you find a style which will suit you and give you the sought after celebrity look...and even more importantly, we hope you get a chance to wear them throughout this British summertime! Here are our top 5 styles for men and women:

Women

The D&G 3061 157213 sunglasses are our favourite cat eye style frames this season! It has become evident that Beyonce and Anne Hathaway are huge fans of this style, and they have both been spotted wearing an almost identical frame to these D&G shades numerous times over the past few weeks!

The Ray-Ban 3138 001/58 is an extremely retro style of aviator sunglasses! The circle above the bridge was originally created with the purpose of holding a pilot’s cigarette in the very early days of Ray-Ban. The frames have been recreated and re-released this season whilst the retro look is at the height of its popularity!

The Ray-Ban 4152 106651 is a striking frame, giving the effect of the cat eye style but without the high point on the outer edge of the lenses. Women who love the cat eye style but find that it does not generally suit their face shape may find that this style is much easier to wear.

We love the oversized style and contrasting colours of the Prada 31NS FAL0A6! These frames are dark Havana at the top which fades downwards into light Havana, and the inner frame is transparent creamy yellow which provides a striking outline for the lenses and temples. This has been a popular frame ever since its release earlier this year.

Last but definitely not least is our favourite frame from the women’s sunglasses range at 1010 Direct - the Prada 27OS 1AB3M1. You may have seen many celebrities wearing a similar frame with thick round lenses throughout 2011 (see Eva Mendes above!), and we now bring you the brand new updated design for this year! At first glance, you may think only a celebrity could wear such an extravagant style, but trust us – this frame is surprisingly easy to pull off! It is so unique and such a great bargain at just £164.95!

Men

These Ray Ban 3016 W0366 frames are worn by Beyonce and Bruno Mars above! This style is as retro as you can get, yet it fits in so well with current fashions! This frame comes in two different sizes and there are many colours to choose from, including a polarized option in black!

Ray Ban 3025 004/51 is the original shape and style of the aviator range. This classic frame is always at the top in the cool stakes, and it is available in over 10 colours at 1010 Direct. You can even buy this frame with polarized lenses.

Ray Ban 2140 901-54 is the classic black wayfarer style favoured by many celebrities as an easy way to make any outfit stylish! This frame will never go out of fashion, will go with any outfit on any occasion, and is probably the most famous style of sunglasses out there!

Ray Ban 3415Q 001/51 is a style favoured by David Beckham this summer. Rectangular lenses suit most face shapes, and the leather bridge provides an extra edge to complete the ever popular retro look!

We hope we have helped you on your quest to choosing your favourite celebrity sunglasses to wear throughout summer 2012!
